Karyokinesis

The physical separation of the nucleus during mitosis that results in two daughter nuclei. It precedes cytokinesis.

Kinetochore

A multiply layered structure found at the centromere of each chromosome during mitosis. Microtubules attach to the kinetochore; the movement of chromatids to opposite poles during mitosis (anaphase) relies on this attachment.
